CHS Choir Students Find Success at District Choir Auditions

By: Sarah Spires, Contributing Writer

Ten CHS students were named to the Northeast District Choir on Saturday, September 15, 2018.  The auditions were held at Moberly High School. These ten students will perform with the rest of the district choir on November 3, 2018, at Moberly High School at 5:00 p.m.

Seven CHS sophomores were selected to the freshman/sophomore choir, and two seniors and one junior made it into the junior/senior choir. Sophomores include Presli Barnes, Seth Beard, Nathan Greene, Eben Lewis, Xaden Lockett, Tianna Pace and Abbie Ross. Seniors Sarah Noonan and William Rolfson and junior Emily Burkhardt are also members of the choir.

The freshman/sophomore choir will perform the following pieces: “Kua Rongo Mai Koe”; “Laudate Dominum Omnes Gentes”; “Come Again Sweet Love Doth Now Invite”; “I Choose Love”; and “I Sing Because I’m Happy.”  The junior/senior choir will sing “I Am Not Yours”; “Rejoice”; “Sing, Ye Righteous”; “Sisi Ni Moja”; and “The Heavens are Telling.”

The CHS students prepared for auditions by practicing a solo piece one time a week with Mrs. Rolfson, CHS choir director. They also worked on sight-reading and key recognition. Each individual solo piece was chosen based on vocal range and if the student liked it and was comfortable with it. Participants earned their points at auditions in the areas of tone production, diction, musicality and accuracy. The majority of the earned points come from the solo performance (75 points), then sight-reading (20 points) and key recognition (4 points).

CHS students performed the following pieces for contest:  Presli Barnes, “Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers”; Seth Beard, “Ah, Willow”; Nathan Greene, “Deep River”; Eben Lewis, “Ah, Willow”; Xaden Lockett, “Come Again, Sweet Love”; Tianna Pace, “Niña”; Abbie Ross, “Danny Boy”; William Rolfson, “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”; Sarah Noonan, “I Love All Graceful Things”; and Emily Burkhard t, “The Last Rose of Summer.”
