For the last few weeks 8th grade Spanish students have been learning about the Day of the Dead in class. El Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd and is similar to Memorial Day, just much more elaborate. Students had the choice of creating an ofrenda (an altar that is traditionally built in homes in Mexico as a memorial to their loved ones who have died), or a calaca shadowbox (a skeleton scene depicting a favorite activity or item) Skeleton figures depicting something a loved one enjoyed when they were alive are traditionally added to the altars that are built. These projects, as well as a Google Slide presentation were presented to the entire 8th grade on Friday, the last day of El Dia de los Muertos, followed by a Mexican feast at the end of the day!
