Research Writing

7th graders have been working on a collaborative research writing project in Science and Language Arts.  Students researched a synthetic material and the natural material from which it was developed.  They compared the materials,  developed a thesis based on their findings, and wrote research papers to support their thesis statements.  This project is intended to teach students about synthetic and natural materials while also learning how to conduct research, develop a thesis, and write a 5-paragraph research paper supported by both paraphrased facts and direct quotes with parenthetical (in-text) citations.  Students were expected to use a minimum of three reliable sources, and include a Works Cited page.  The research papers were written using MLA format.
