Toys for Tots Collection
Next week the CHS Cheerleaders will be collecting toys to donate to Toys for Tots. If you would like to donate a new toy, you can drop it off at any of the school offices. We will also have a table set up at the game on Friday, December 20th. It is a JV/Varsity Girls game against New Bloomfield. That will be our final night for donating. They would also love for everyone coming to the game that night to dress with holiday spirit!
Thanks for your support! Go Panthers!

In the event of inclement weather, the Centralia R-VI Schools will notify parents of school cancellations with aSchool Reach phone call, local TV stations, radio stations, and the Centralia School Website. Parents are urged to turn on their radio, television, or log onto this website when there is a question of school closing rather than trying to contact the school or local media.
In case of severe weather school closing information, the following stations will be listing cancellations for Centralia Public Schools:
School administrators and bus personnel will evaluate the road conditions between 4:30 and 6:00 a.m. on days when weather is a concern. Every attempt is made to notify the media by 6:00 a.m. if possible. In the event that weather conditions are such that more time is needed, notice of cancellations will occur no later than 7:00 a.m. If it is appropriate, the Centralia R-VI School District may declare a "Late Start" to a school day due to weather and/or road conditions. A "Late Start" would be declared if the weather and/or road conditions are poor in the early morning but the forecast indicates that road conditions will improve significantly by mid-morning. Under the "Late Start," school will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at the regularly scheduled time. Buildings will open at 9:30 a.m. (30 minutes prior to school starting).
On days when school is dismissed early due to weather conditions, parents should turn to one of the radio stations, TV stations or check out our website listed above. Parents are encouraged to notify child-care providers or make other necessary arrangements during inclement weather conditions.

It is hard to believe we are already at the halfway point of the 2nd quarter. We will be having several holiday concerts and activities throughout the district in the coming month. I encourage you to take the opportunity to view the hard work of our students and staff at these performances.
The Centralia R-VI Board of Education met Monday night, November 18, 2013. The meeting started with the recognition and celebration of our Centralia Lady Panthers’ 3rd consecutive State Championship. The room was full as Coach Angell, Coach Bostick, and Coach Henry summarized the season. The girls introduced themselves and their parents. The board expressed how proud they are of the girls. It was agreed that the girls have been great ambassadors for our school district through their historic accomplishments.
Some consent agenda items included: Setting filing dates for prospective School Board Members. The date for filing starts on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at 8:00 a.m. and ends on Tuesday, January 21, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. The board also extended the district’s copying and printing contract with DaCom. With the extension, all buildings will be receiving upgrades. Additionally, the special education department will have printers and a copier added to their program for convenience and confidentiality. Also, the district will see a savings of about $1,000 per month with the new contract. The board concluded the consent agenda items by updating a couple of board policies and approving the bus route mileage.
Next, the board formally recognized Bobbie Tetley and her contributions to the Champion Academy program. In June of 2012, the board voted to dedicate the Champion Academy Alternative School Program to Mrs. Tetley for her “vision, determination, and implementation of this successful endeavor within our school district.” Justin Romine presented her with the plaque that will hang at Champion Academy. Plans are being made to have an official hanging of the plaque this spring.
Next the board heard a presentation from Quality Network Solutions (QNS). Mr. Stickney will be retiring after the 2014-15 school year. In addition to that, Mr. McKenzie turned in his resignation to the board that was accepted later in the evening. He will be pursuing teaching and instruction opportunities at the college level. With that, the district heard from Ryan Hortenstine with QNS. Mr. Hortenstine presented a contract to the board to take over the servers and technology repair of the school district beginning in January of 2014. The board had a lot of questions regarding how the company worked and would interact with our school district. Mr. Hortenstine answered the questions and noted that QNS has a very good reputation in Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Hortenstine said that QNS had approximately a 90% same-day repairs record on ticket requests this year. Several contractual issues were discussed. QNS has agreed to a modified/trial contract of six months beginning after Christmas. The board will consider the contract at the December 9th meeting.
The board also examined textbook purchasing procedures. The textbook budget has decreased in recent years. The board received a report that I had prepared giving a brief recent history of expenditures in that area. A good discussion on the future of textbooks in relationship to technology and digital devices ensued. The Common Core Standards and their effect were also debated briefly. The board did not take action but wanted to make sure that the budget was used to replace any current textbooks that are damaged or in disrepair until a more permanent decision can be made.
In executive session, the board accepted resignations from Matt McKenzie and Edgar Thomas. The board thanked both for their service to the district. The board also hired Erich Chick as an assistant baseball coach and Mark Schmidt and Austin McBride as wrestling coaches.
The district is still accepting survey responses for the Kids' First grant. We will be closing the survey in December, but we would like every parent in the district to take a moment to complete the survey. If the district receives part of the Kids' First grant, there will be additional mental health resources made available to both our students and community. You can take the survey here.
As always, I encourage you to visit or attend an event in one of our fine buildings.
