CBMS Students Learn About Bullying
Students at CBMS learned the basics of bullying during November Counselor lessons with Mona Dupre. Students learned that bullying is strongly influenced by peer behaviors and reactions and that they have a role in stopping bullying.
Bystanders and non-participants, students who are aware of bullying, can have a powerful effect on bullying, positive or negative. Current research has shown that bystanders and non-participants are involved in most bullying situations, usually by either providing attention to the bullying or actually joining in on the aggression. Students tend to look to other kids for cues regarding how to respond when they witness bullying. When kids stand around and watch or laugh, they can encourage and prolong bullying. Bullying behavior is often reinforced by peers. When this happens, it can be seen as acceptable and normal within the school if no one takes action against it. Bystanders and non-participants have the most powerful effect on bullying attitudes, behaviors, and culture in a school. When students stand up for each other and against bullying, accept each other, and encourage each other, everything changes.
Watch this video to learn how bystanders conspired to stand up for and encourage one student and ended up changing the entire school culture in the process.
