From the Superintendent-December 2013
I would like to wish all of the families and patrons of the Centralia R-VI School District a Merry Christmas. It is hard to believe the school year is already at the halfway point. We have had a very successful first half of the year, and I cannot wait to see what the second half holds for our students.
I want to express my gratitude for those who took the time to fill out the survey for the Boone County “Kid’s First” tax initiative. Dr. Lou Ann Tanner-Jones, a Centralia graduate and the Special Education Director in Columbia, is coordinating the county schools’ coalition efforts. As part of her summary to the Children’s Board, Dr. Tanner-Jones wrote, “We are partnering with the other Boone County school districts to work on a proposal for the Children Services Board who will be distributing the funds. Our hope is to coordinate the county. We have partnered with Dr. Wendy Reinke from MU to design a research based model which utilizes highly trained school mental health professionals in its operation. We desire coordinated, cohesive services for students throughout the county. Our model is an integrated support system and is innovative, responsive and “fills in the gaps” for our students and families as they seek and receive mental health services available through this tax.” Needless to say, I am very optimistic and excited about the potential of this initiative for our students and families.
During the December board meeting, the board of education discussed a potential partnership with IMSecure (IMS) who is based in Mexico, Missouri. IMS specializes in digital record keeping and storage. They have a warehouse in Mexico where they can store records. Public schools are notorious for using and storing a lot of paper. For instance, we have transcripts dating back years that are stored in file cabinets at the high school. IMS will scan these to digital form and/or store and index them for the district. The transcripts will then be at the guidance department’s fingertips in a very easy to manage and search system. IMS will also give the district potential solutions to board meeting and human resources documentation.
The board also authorized a “go-to-market” resolution through George K. Baum & Company to refinance the 2004 bond that built the district’s Agriculture and Technical Center in 2000. The district will save approximately $30,000 for the next six years without adding time to the payoff.
Quality Network Solutions (QNS) was given a six-month trial contract through board action to handle the district’s technology services. The company will be taking over server care, computer repair, and the district’s network starting in January 2014.
Finally, the board accepted the resignation of Jeff Martin as girls’ volleyball coach and the retirement announcement of Erle Bennett. Coach Bennett will retire as physical education instructor, head boys’ track coach, and JV basketball coach. He will, however, remain as the Panther head football coach.
In closing, I would encourage everyone to become familiar with the district’s winter weather procedures. If you are traveling over the break, please travel safely and enjoy the holidays.

Toys for Tots Collection
Next week the CHS Cheerleaders will be collecting toys to donate to Toys for Tots. If you would like to donate a new toy, you can drop it off at any of the school offices. We will also have a table set up at the game on Friday, December 20th. It is a JV/Varsity Girls game against New Bloomfield. That will be our final night for donating. They would also love for everyone coming to the game that night to dress with holiday spirit!
Thanks for your support! Go Panthers!
